Gas heating systems can be flushed
Emptying a fully pumped heating system makes it easier to work on the system. To work on a heating radiator problem or to extend the system perhaps. Cleaning your system is something that can be done by the none professional but competent do it yourself practitioner.
In most situations Cleaning the central heating is performed to clean the heating radiators. Before any work is attempted you need to switch off the central heating pump and heating boiler. To enable the system to completely flush you will need to see to it that no water is getting in the heating system.
Your heating system is filled up with water via the header cystern. The rate of flow of water in the expansion cystern is controlled by use of a common ball valve. This ball valve is a ball attached to an arm that, when raised closes the valve, which means when the water tank is full no more water can get in because the valve is closed. Water is added to the central heating system if the levels fall as the ball will drop on the water surface opening the valve. This process will need to be stopped if the gas central heating system is to be fully drained. One of the better ways to end this is by placing a piece of wood across the water tank and splicing the value arm to it, which will close this valve.
Having stopped the entry of any water to your gas central heating system you can now take the next step by attaching a hosepipe to an outlet valve on a radiator and running this to the outside of your property. The heating system can now empty by water flowing out of the metal radiator, through the outlet valve, and into the external flush. To drain your whole gas heating system you need to attach this hosepipe to one of the ground floor radiators, the lowest ones in the house. You now need to be diligent and check that all the water has emptied out and that no more water is entering before any other work is executed on the heating system.
If you need to complete this process rapidly you can also vent the bleed valves on the heating radiators on the top floors. When the water is emptied off you are free to work on your heating radiator.
